LOCAL CONTROL
- Newtown is a special place to live, work, raise your children and retire. Let's keep it that way.
Connecticut is a "Home-Rule State" and, as such, our state's Constitution guarantees local control under most circumstances when it comes to Zoning, Education, and general Governance. Like most Newtown residents, I like it that way. I believe a community thrives when allowed to; and Newtown has largely controlled its own destiny by its own collective definition for the "Character" of our community for more than 300-years.
Lately, "self-determination" has been under attack from the majority party in our own state government. It's become a core priority of the majority party to proliferate high-density, "affordable" housing to counter decades of slow economic and residential growth. Majority leadership flexes its muscle to pressure "rank & file" to vote for a turn-over of zoning authority to the state.
Undoing "Local Control" will sidestep the public-process by which we currently determine what we want Newtown to be. Silencing our community's voice, and undoing over 300-years of give & take will NEVER get my vote. I can assure you I have and will always vote 'Nay" to state control of local zoning.
I will continue to aggressively defend us from the outside influencers' efforts and majority party's pressure to change the character of single-family-zoned towns across CT, Newtown included.
